Time Ticks as Qatar Thinks

Throughout the proceedings of committee, the issues of giving Qatar the honour of hosting the resplendent 2022 FIFA World Cup have been intensively discussed and debated. However, since Qatar has already spent an immense amount of money on the requisite needs of the upcoming tournament, changing the venue at this point, only three years prior would be implausible. Nevertheless, there are a lot of amendments and changes Qatar must bring about radical changes, with respect to their somewhat contentious laws and policies regarding LGBT rights, human rights of migrant labourers from South Asia and alcohol consumption. 

Qatar must accommodate offices of various organisations like the Amnesty International being set up in the country to oversee the treatment and safety of migrant workers following numerous accusations and allegations regarding the same. It is the responsibility of the Qatari government to ensure that no worker’s wage is left unpaid, introduce laws regarding specific and limited working hours. This will ensure the welfare of every single migrant worker who resides in their country. Qatari officials must see to it that under no circumstances must any of the labourers involved in the construction of the infrastructure for this esteemed event be abused or have their basic human rights taken away from them. Strict action must be taken against employers who are found guilty of violating these regulations, along with the improvement in the working and living conditions of these labourers. It must be made extremely clear that these labourers are free to leave the country at any time they wish too, and anyone in the country convicted of passport confiscation must be persecuted immediately.  It must be ensured the safety of all fans and players who will visit Qatar be the top priority of the government, and appointment of high level security is a matter that must not be taken lightly by Qatar. This is especially important since there have been multiple allegations towards the country stating that it funds non state activists and terrorism. Qatar must take full responsibility for the welfare for the colossal number of tourists that will flock the country in order to witness this extravaganza. 

Another pressing matter that repeatedly came up was Qatar’s attitude towards members belonging to the LGBT community. Qatari laws deem any act of homosexuality a punishable offence, which poses a threat to the LGBT fans.  On no grounds can these fans be excluded from watching a tournament, which should be followed for the entire footballing world, regardless of their race, sexuality or religion. Qatar must put forward appropriate laws, or at least amend the current ones, to ensure the welfare and safety of every single fan who visits the country. An amendment must be made to the alcohol consumption laws, at least during the time of the 2022 World Cup. The FIFA season is a time for celebration, joy and enjoyment, to ban these excited fans from public alcohol consumption is to ban the fans from enjoying themselves. This may also impact turnout to watch this event, which is undesirable, to say the very least. 

Qatar must also take into account its climatic issues. Being a Gulf State, it must be noted that temperatures do soar extremely high which could be dangerous to the players and the fans. Qatar must do everything within its mandate to solve this issue and look into the cooling technologies in the stadiums, to ensure the welfare of fans and athletes. To sum up, no matter how elaborate and impressive the infrastructure Qatar has constructed may be, if it does not pay attention to and solve each and every one of the mentioned issues, it is certain that the 2022 Qatar World Cup will definitely not be a success.

It is a widely acknowledged fact that the United States conducts itself in a hypocritical manner, and contradicts itself repeatedly in international forums. The Disarmament and International Security Council proved to be no different, and the press conference revealed the double standards the government has for its citizens. The United States has conducted itself in an entirely unfit manner, but somehow, it remains unsurprising.
