United States; Divided Thoughts

It is a widely acknowledged fact that the United States conducts itself in a hypocritical manner, and contradicts itself repeatedly in international forums. The Disarmament and International Security Council proved to be no different, and the press conference revealed the double standards the government has for its citizens. The United States has conducted itself in an entirely unfit manner, but somehow, it remains unsurprising.
When asked informally, the delegate of the US said that she would refuse to answer any questions in the press conference, so it came as a surprise when she spoke on gun control regulations within the US. The delegate stated that the American government believes that the ownership of guns gives its citizens much needed peace of mind, and protection. When a member of the press quoted the horrifying statistics of gun violence in only 2018 within the US- Total number of incidents being 38,451; number of deaths being 9,650; number of children below the age of 11 killed being 456- the delegate said that:
“I believe in three types of lies: lies, more lies and statistics.”
This is absolutely outrageous, especially considering that the number of people dying is apparently not enough proof to this delegate that laws need to change. The US seems keen on ignoring the harsh reality- that people are dying because of firearms that they claim are available for ‘protection’. The slack gun laws remain a horrifying truth which the US government is willfully ignorant of, because statistics are “lies”. We wonder what it will take for their government to believe that all is not well, if numbers can’t be used as proof.
The delegate of the US then said that she believed in the number system. Rather ironic.
And then the delegate was questioned upon the nation’s stringent immigration laws. No comprehensive answer was received when the delegate was asked about how First Lady Melania Trump and her family obtained American citizenship. They are former citizens of Slovania, and have now obtained American citizenship only in lieu of their direct relationship to the President. But the official reason cited, since the US has made chain migration a messy, highly complicated process, is that Melania Trump is an immigrant of “extraordinary ability” and "sustained national and international acclaim". The visa she was given is known as the Einstein visa, and is given to people who are highly acclaimed in their field - the government cites Pulitzer, Oscar, and Olympic winners as examples - as well as respected academic researchers as well as multinational executives. The talented first lady was granted this visa reserved for the brilliant, some might say due to her influential husband. But in a democracy such as USA, it is hard to believe; surely Mrs. Trump’s modelling and jewelry line warrant her the title of a genius. Chain migration is a stance that President Donald Trump is strongly against, voicing his opinions on numerous occasions.

However, recently the First Lady’s parents were also granted citizenship. USA said that “time periods and situations must be take into account”. However a mere month ago, eleven thousand children were detained in facilities, separated from their parents, for weeks on end.  Surely their situation justified the potentially irreparable psychological damage caused to the children and parents while the government took their time to decide their course of action. After all USA did clarify in committee they like to think through their decisions , taking more than two years to sort out laws on gun control.
The US just goes on to repeatedly show that it does not know how to handle itself in international forums. The delegate proves to not be aware of key policies and does not have any way to defend them without outright discrediting of widely acknowledged statistics.
The US has imposed a self proclaimed “bill from hell” introducing large sanctions on Russia. Their ongoing efforts to seemingly alienate the international community with incessant trade wars is leaving them in a dire situation.
The representative of the United States has confused every nation in committee with her contradicting stance and paradoxical statements. The only comprehensive conclusion drawn is that the US spouts malarkey on the regular and will not yield or change its policies, even for those they represent. It should also be noted these staunch policies they are fanatical about, are the very ones they seemed to be confused about.

These two blocs were the only two blocs in the DISEC general assembly. The working paper of the bloc headed by the delegate of the United States of America was sponsored by the delegate of South Korea, the delegate of Germany, the delegate of the United Kingdom and the delegate of France. The working paper of the delegate of China was sponsored by the delegate of Russia, delegate of Iraq, delegate of Iran, delegate of Nepal and delegate of DPRK.
