On the first day of the model UNSC, with the agenda being ‘reforms in the united nations security council- equity and efficiency’, the delegate of china seemed to have very strong views and aims concerning her country and its agenda in the session. She stood as a representative of the permanent five countries and strongly debated against the abolishment of the veto power.

The p5 nations stood ground defending themselves against all the accusations of misuse and irresponsibility with regards to the veto power. With most of the other delegates lobbying on the abolishment of the veto power, the countries in support of it formed a bloc with suggested reforms.

Their main cause of concern was the situation of the security council in today’s world. They argued that there has been no change in its state since the times of the cold war, and that recent times and recent situations call for a change in the council.

However, they were firmly against the inclusion of the g4 countries-India, Brazil, Japan and Germany-as the permanent members of the security council. According to them, the sudden introduction of four countries as the permanent members could create controversy and lead to a reduction in efficiency.

The delegate of china stated that her country believes in consensus, and along with the other members if her bloc, came up with the compromise. They called for the inclusion of three new countries as the permanent members of the security council, but, without the power of veto. Their reason for this was the widespread confusion and controversy caused already caused by the veto, and the increase in this that would be caused by an introduction of new countries with veto power.

The bloc spoke powerfully and made sure to put their point across to the committee. They called themselves supporters of not only their individual countries, but as supporters and advocates of the security council. They made it clear that they wanted to advocate purely for world peace and allies of all the permanent and non permanent members. They called for a sustainable, logical security council with an aim to protect the best interests of the whole world.

In the end, the entire bloc-consisting of the p5, France, Russia, Switzerland, South Africa, the g4, and Australia-called for reform in the UNSC, with their immediate focus being on the inclusion of three new permanent members without the power of veto vote. Their agenda for the next day was to reach out to the delegate of the Islamic states as well, and promote the agenda- proper representations of all countries in the united nations security council.

These two blocs were the only two blocs in the DISEC general assembly. The working paper of the bloc headed by the delegate of the United States of America was sponsored by the delegate of South Korea, the delegate of Germany, the delegate of the United Kingdom and the delegate of France. United States; Divided Thoughts

It is a widely acknowledged fact that the United States conducts itself in a hypocritical manner, and contradicts itself repeatedly in international forums. The Disarmament and International Security Council proved to be no different, and the press conference revealed the double standards the government has for its citizens. The United States has conducted itself in an entirely unfit manner, but somehow, it remains unsurprising. When asked informally, the delegate of the US said that she would refuse to answer any questions in the press conference, so it came as a surprise when she spoke on gun control regulations within the US.
