Saudi Vs Qatar
Character Analysis

Throughout the proceedings of committee, especially during the press conference, Saudi Arabia and Qatar’s mutual hostility was clearly indicated through their ardent debates, with neither refusing to bow down. Saudi Arabia’s steadfast allies: UAE and Bahrain were also indispensable in Saudi’s battle against Qatar. The session was fuelled by Saudi’s animosity towards Qatar’s ally, Iran. These countries had a steady and relentless torrent of accusations and allegations aimed Qatar’s way, namely Qatar’s apparent funding of multiple non state actors, its attitude towards the LGBT community, harsh working conditions of migrant labourers and alcohol consumption laws. They also seemed extremely convinced about the superiority of their own infrastructure and laws regarding the FIFA 2022 World Cup as compared to Qatar, not failing to mention their advanced cooling technologies in stadiums, along with apparently relaxed labour, LGBTQ and alcohol consumption laws.
They proposed to host the FIFA 2022 World Cup within their countries, as they believed this to be a suitable alternative. They felt Qatar was unfit to host this esteemed tournament. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and UAE had formed quite a powerful alliance, brought about by their mutual feud with Qatar and Iran. Other Gulf countries like Egypt, Kuwait and Jordan were also firm supporters of this dynamic union. They clearly did not reflect upon the stance they had for Qatar. They firmly stuck to their views that Qatar was unsafe for visiting fans and players due to their apparent ties with terrorist organisations and assured that, their countries did not support any such non state actors, thus potraying their countries as a safer and more welcoming location for the tourists and players. These countries also stated that combined together, these countries have a sufficient number of stadiums with state of the art technologies and immense seating capacity. Having heard these strong statements, a large number of countries supported their decision to take away the privilege of hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup from Qatar.
However, Qatar and its firm ally, the Asian Football Confederation had an extremely strong defence prepared. Together they denied all allegations thrown at them which included having ties with non state actors. They thereby ensured complete safety of all the fans and players, especially with 8 countries sending trained security personnel to Qatar during the time of the tournament. Qatar had assured that fans and players belonging to the LGBTQ Community would now be allowed to watch matches provided they do not show any public display of affection. The country also stated that students in Qatar will be educated about the LGBTQ Community. Thus, Qatar’s statements made it quite clear that safety and welfare of members of this community would no longer be an issue. Qatar countered accusations regarding ill treatment of migrant workers by assuring that the Kafala system had been abolished in the country and that the working and living conditions of these workers had been improved.
Another matter that came up was that Qatar had already spent billions of dollars for the construction of stadiums, transport and the all the other requirements for the upcoming FIFA World Cup . Qatar also rightfully won the bid to host the tournament, thereby stating that this privilege cannot be taken away from the country now.
The issue about the public alcohol consumption laws had also been addressed, as Qatar had already made amendments and reforms to laws regarding the same. Since, the World Cup will be hosted in winter and state of the art cooling technologies have already been implemented in stadiums, the issue of Qatar’s harsh climatic conditions would no longer be an issue .These two sides have been at odds since the initial times of the committee and they still are. However, the question to ponder upon now is; Are either of these countries suitable hosts for the upcoming extravaganza, World Cup 2022?
