(28 August 2018)-  To say that it was not a good day for the delegate of Qatar in committee would be a grand understatement. Most delegates, notably the delegates of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain amongst the other countless nations repeatedly mentioned the issues revolving around hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup. One of the main points often stated was the extremely controversial, to say the least Kafala system, with respect to the long working hours and exploitation of the migrant workers from South Asian countries constructing the infrastructure required for the upcoming world cup. Another prominent topic that was brought up was the decision to hold the World Cup in the winter of 2022, to avoid Qatar’s harsh summer heat. However, this clashed with the various European Football tournaments like the Premier League and a number of American tournaments. This was not all. Some of the discussions related to cultural issues mentioned were the laws in place in Qatar regarding the rights of the section of fans which belong to the LGBTQ community and laws concerning alcohol consumption. The delegate of Qatar did stand up for himself, but the rest of committee also firmly stuck to their main viewpoint ‘Qatar is not a suitable place for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.’ They also continued to feel that it must be held in a country which has appropriate laws with the best interests of the extensive number of fans that will turn out to watch this prestigious event. However, it was not true that Qatar had absolutely no supporters in its struggle to prove that it was extremely capable to host the much anticipated 2022 World Cup. The Asian Football Confederation turned out to be a firm supporter of Qatar, proving its loyalty by repeatedly opposing the multiple allegations and accusations the rest of the countries persistently threw at Qatar’s decision to host the esteemed FIFA World Cup. “AFC wants the World Cup to be held in Qatar because it is in Asia, and the AFC believes that this will serve as an advantage for us”-These are the precise words quoted by the Under Secretary of the AFC. Nevertheless, with respect to the current proceedings in committee, Qatar finds itself in an extremely unfavourable situation, and there is a fair possibility that the privilege of hosting the much awaited 2022 FIFA World Cup may be taken away from Qatar.

The two Superpowers, China and the United States of America made two separate blocs. These blocs made two working papers as a draft to make a resolution. These two blocs were the only two blocs in the DISEC general assembly. The working paper of the bloc headed by the delegate of the United States of America was sponsored by the delegate of South Korea, the delegate of Germany, the delegate of the United Kingdom and the delegate of France. The working paper of the delegate of China was sponsored by the delegate of Russia, delegate of Iraq, delegate of Iran, delegate of Nepal and delegate of DPRK. The working paper of the delegate of China stated the need for an international organization like the ITU to help curb Cyber-warfare. United States; Divided Thoughts

It is a widely acknowledged fact that the United States conducts itself in a hypocritical manner, and contradicts itself repeatedly in international forums. The Disarmament and International Security Council proved to be no different, and the press conference revealed the double standards the government has for its citizens. The United States has conducted itself in an entirely unfit manner, but somehow, it remains unsurprising. When asked informally, the delegate of the US said that she would refuse to answer any questions in the press conference, so it came as a surprise when she spoke on gun control regulations within the US. The delegate stated that the American government believes that the ownership of guns gives its citizens much needed peace of mind, and protection.
