VS.
RELIGIOUS SANCTIONS AND LAWS

Beneath the factual debate in committee, two opposing ideologies have been at play. On one hand are the proponents of LGBTQ Rights while on the other is the Islamic doctrinal de recognition of homosexuality. It has been a fight between the LGBTQ Community and the Islamic clerics, with neither refusing to bow down. The members of this community and their supporters however argue that it is one of their vital human rights to be able to make their own decisions and choices as individuals without being marginalised. They believe that their personal preferences are in no way a factor to determine them as inferior. 

There is a contrast in opinions because both religions, namely Christianity and Islam do not deem homosexuality as something that is acceptable in society. This is because they believe that this is unnatural. The question now arises;’ Why unnatural?’ Is it because men should be with women to have children? Or is it because this is the scared bond of marriage? But how does this come with homosexuals? To that the homosexuals counter that marriage is not only about having children, it is also about living a life with the person you desire to be with. They further strongly disagree to the conception of homosexuality being unnatural. The Australian Psychological Society states that being attracted to the same sex is as natural as being attracted to the opposite sex and that it is not possible to change sexuality through any medical means. The members of this community state that being a part of this community is often natural and not a ‘choice’. Just like being short or being left handed is not within our control, being born LGBT too is not a choice and is out of our mandate. A question is left to ponder on- “Whether it is just that an individual be punished or looked down upon because they were born biologically different?” Nevertheless, LGBTQ Members have gained support worldwide in the form of pride marches. Furthermore, the victory of Christine Hallquist, the first transgender gubernatorial candidate of the Democratic Party clearly highlights that the world has recognised sexual orientation to be as much one’s identity as gender. 


The Islamic clerics on the other hand cite years of doctrinal conditioning and Koranic teaching or rather its interpretation to conclude that homosexuality or any kind of sexuality that is not hetero is an affront to society. The clerics have forbidden any acts of homosexuality and are liable to various punishments including death penalty. The Sharia Law scholars overwhelmingly teach that same-gender sex is a sin. Islam firmly sticks to its views from the Koran. These state that homosexuality clashes with the “natural” order in which God created human beings. They believe it brings destruction to the family and leads people to ignore God’s guidance in life. In addition to this, multiple Christian denominations and groups have been vocal and active about their opposition to homosexuality. Catholic opponents also argue that inclusion of same-sex unions within the definition of marriage would also evidence rejection of children being raised by their biological parents. 

Hence, with neither side willing to engage, this unfortunately appears to be a fight unto death with no respite in sight.

The two Superpowers, China and the United States of America made two separate blocs. These blocs made two working papers as a draft to make a resolution. These two blocs were the only two blocs in the DISEC general assembly. The working paper of the bloc headed by the delegate of the United States of America was sponsored by the delegate of South Korea, the delegate of Germany, the delegate of the United Kingdom and the delegate of France. The working paper of the delegate of China was sponsored by the delegate of Russia, delegate of Iraq, delegate of Iran, delegate of Nepal and delegate of DPRK. The working paper of the delegate of China stated the need for an international organization like the ITU to help curb Cyber-warfare. The delegate of USA stated that that the UN Security Council can make a sub-body who's members would be elected by the general assembly and would create an international cyber-code. United States; Divided Thoughts

It is a widely acknowledged fact that the United States conducts itself in a hypocritical manner, and contradicts itself repeatedly in international forums. The Disarmament and International Security Council proved to be no different, and the press conference revealed the double standards the government has for its citizens. The United States has conducted itself in an entirely unfit manner, but somehow, it remains unsurprising. When asked informally, the delegate of the US said that she would refuse to answer any questions in the press conference, so it came as a surprise when she spoke on gun control regulations within the US. The delegate stated that the American government believes that the ownership of guns gives its citizens much needed peace of mind, and protection.
